The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department is dedicated to serving the community by responding to emergencies that immediately threaten life or property, to routine citizen requests for information or assistance, and performing duties in fire suppression, emergency medical aid or rescue and hazardous material responses.
We are a 100% volunteer organization staffed primarily by your Middlebury neighbors. Our volunteer firefighters and EMT's are highly trained and work under the supervision of Fire Chief James Grohs. A typical fire fighter completes over 150 hours of certification training but many of our members have invested much more to meet ever increasing certification requirements. Members also attend regular trainings to ensure their performance as a firefighter and EMS provider is in accordance with State of Connecticut law, protocols and standard operating procedures.
The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department firefighters and EMTs respond to 1300 emergency calls annually. Calls include fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, rescues, fire alarms and requests for assistance.
We are always looking for new members to help as firefighters and emergency medical technicians.
Our History
In 1941, the town approved $4000 for the purchase of a fire apparatus. Over 80 years later, Middlebury fire department has continually grown its capabilities in order to better serve the residents and guests of our town.
The MVFD Ambulance is a core component of the fire department serving all residents of the town. The ambulances are operated by fire fighters certified as EMTs and by the Ambulance Auxiliary. MVFD answers roughly 1000 EMS calls annually, that is 2 to 3 calls a day. Current EMTs may apply to the Auxiliary provided they are available at least for one 8 hour shift each month. Residency in the town is not required but non-residents are required to be in town during their shifts.
